Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the option to question specific decisions from the official, echoing the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
