Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these drugs must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become starving," described a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle support.
