Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
